Understanding Footing Types (NBC 205:2024)

When designing a residential RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) building in Nepal, the structural load varies significantly depending on the position of the column. The NBC 205 categorizes footings into four primary types to optimize material usage and ensure structural safety:

C1 & C2: Perimeter Footings

  • C1 (Corner Footings): Located at the 4 extreme corners of the building. These carry the least amount of structural load.
  • C2 (Face/Edge Footings): Located along the outer perimeter walls. They carry moderate loads from the exterior masonry.

C3 & C4: Heavy Load Footings

  • C3 (Interior Footings): Located in the center of the grid. These carry the heaviest loads as they support floor slabs from all four sides.
  • C4 (Staircase Footings): Located exclusively under the staircase. Designed to withstand massive dynamic loads and heavy concrete mass from the stair flights.

Eccentricity & Strap Beams

In urban areas like Kathmandu, houses are frequently built directly on the property line (zero setback). Because you cannot excavate into your neighbor's land, the column must be placed at the very edge of the footing pad. This creates an eccentric footing. To stop the column from tipping over under heavy load, a heavy reinforced concrete Strap Beam must be cast to tie the eccentric footing to a safe interior footing.
