A septic tank is a sealed, underground anaerobic digestion chamber. Wastewater from toilets enters the tank, where gravity causes heavy organic solids to sink to the bottom (forming sludge) while fats, oils, and grease float to the top (forming scum). 5. Top 4 Site Mistakes to Avoid in Nepal
❌ 1. Directly Routing Kitchen and Bath Greywater
Soapy water from showers and fat/grease from kitchen sinks kill anaerobic digesting bacteria inside the tank. Route greywater separately directly to the soak pit or municipal sewer.
❌ 2. Omitting T-Pipes or Baffle Wall
Inlet and outlet pipes MUST extend 300mm below the liquid level using T-shaped PVC fittings. Without them, floating scum passes straight into the soak pit and clogs the soil.
❌ 3. Forgetting the Roof-Level Vent Pipe
Anaerobic digestion produces flammable methane and hydrogen sulfide gases. A 2-inch PVC vent pipe capped with a wire mesh must be extended above roof level.
❌ 4. Building Small Soak Pits in Clay Soil
Kathmandu Valley's Kalimati clay has extremely low water percolation rates. A small soak pit will overflow within months. Use a larger soak pit area or a Dispersion Trench.
