How to Check Sand Quality in the Field: Simple Site Tests

Why Sand Quality Control Matters in Nepal

In Nepal's residential construction—whether building a RCC frame structure in Kathmandu Valley or a rural residential home—sand (बालुवा) is a primary component of structural concrete, mortar, and plaster. Poor-quality river sand contaminated with clay, silt, organic waste, or mica drastically reduces concrete compressive strength and leads to micro-cracks during Dhalai (ढलाइ).

According to NBC 101:1994 (Materials Specifications) and IS 383:1970, fine aggregate must be clean, sharp, hard, and free from harmful organic or silty layers. Before accepting a sand delivery truck from Trishuli, Sunkoshi, or local riverbeds, homeowners and site Mistris can perform four fast, non-technical field checks without lab equipment.

1. Visual & Tactile Test

Before unloading the truck, perform a quick hands-on check.

  • 1Fineness & Graded Grains: Rub a small handful of damp sand between your palms. It should feel gritty and coarse, not soft or powdery like river dust.
  • 2Staining Check: Release the sand. If your palms are heavily stained with dark brown mud or sticky clay layer, the silt content exceeds safe working limits.
  • 3Foreign Contaminants: Look out for roots, mica flakes, shells, or topsoil clumps. Mica reduces bonding between cement paste and aggregate.
  • 4Smell Test: Dampen the sand and smell it. An earthy or stagnant smell indicates organic decay, which retards cement setting time.

2. Silt Content Test (Glass Jar Test)

Excess silt (>8% by volume) weakens concrete matrix and causes shrinkage cracks in plaster.

Required Tools:

  • Straight-sided clear glass jar or 250ml measuring cylinder.
  • Clean water and table salt (1 tsp to speed up settling).
Silt % = (h₁ / h₂) × 100

h₁ = Silt Layer Height | h₂ = Total Sand Height

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Fill the glass cylinder/jar up to 50 ml (or 20% height) with the sample sand.
  2. Add salt solution until the liquid level reaches approximately 150 ml (or 75% height).
  3. Shake the jar vigorously for 1 minute to suspend all silt particles.
  4. Set the jar on a level surface and leave it undisturbed for 3 hours.
  5. Observe the distinct layer of silt settled on top of the coarser sand particles.
⚠️ Safety Threshold:Silt layer (h₁) should NOT exceed 8% of the total sand height (h₂). If the silt height reads above 8%, reject the delivery or thoroughly wash the sand before structural Dhalai.

3. Sand Bulking Test

Dry sand expands when moist due to surface tension created by thin water films around sand particles. This volume increase is called Bulking. If ignored during manual volumetric batching, you will add less sand than design dictates, making concrete harsh and prone to honeycombing.

How to Measure Bulking on Site:

  1. Fill a jar with damp sand up to height H1 without compacting.
  2. Inundate with water and stir thoroughly with a rod to drive out air bubbles.
  3. Allow the saturated sand to settle down to a reduced height H2.

💡 Engineering Tip:Adjust nominal mix proportions (e.g., 1:1.5:3 for M20) by increasing the measure box depth by the calculated bulking percentage when using damp river sand.
